Firstly can I clarify that I am not into country music.

But...
...there are a couple of "country" musicians that I do enjoy. I figure (notice the country patois there) that as country music is so big in America that some great musicians must have been raised within the genre. (Post facto justification or what...?)
Johnny Cash obviously. Not all is stuff, OK, but the Folsom Prison era is quality.
But also there's one guy, Tom Russell that I like. His album 'Love and Fear' I find especially...haunting...? Bloody well recorded and produced as well (note hifi link there). There's some of country's corny honesty about life and love, but hey-ho. All in all a great album that continues to grow on me. There's a great song about a mexican being electrocuted on a pylon cable. Bizarre, but brilliant.

Over the past couple of years I've managed to see live elements of my fav' band - Cymande.
Essentially the original drummer, Sam Kelly had managed to round up the original sax player, percussionist and one of the singers and, using musicians from Kelly's other bands had formed 'Cymande 2'. This semi-reunion band did a few gigs, playing old Cymande favourites Bra, The Message, Fug, etc.,... (if you don't know them, you may be familiar with parts of them as sampled by De La Soul, The Fugees, MC Solar, etc.,...).
At the Birmingham jazz festival a couple of years back, after listening to Cymande 2 I bumped into the charming Mr. Kelly at a burger van and got chatting to him. He spoke about his attempts to contact more of the original members and persuade them to come together for a full Cymande reunion. He hinted at some initial progress. (He really was incredibly friendly and humble. A genuinely nice guy.)
Well it seems as if Mr. Kelly has pulled it off...

http://cymande-online.com/2011/11/cymande-reunites-to-release-album-in-2012/

Apparently the live dates have been postponed to 2013, and I really hope they take place, and that Steve Scipio (one of my musical heroes) is there with his lyrical basslines. I suppose the band's average age was early 20s in their 1973 hey-day, so they're not getting any younger...
Anyway. I look forward to their new album with equal measures of excitement and terror (can it really meet my expectations...?).

A bit of a twin thread to the 'Guilty Pleasures' thread this...

As grown up audiophiles, we've all developed our own musical interests, and have burrowed deep into the most extreme corners of those interests. In most cases this burrowing is for genuine personal musical pleasure, and many gems are uncovered. But also, it's almost a requirement of credibility amongst one's male peers to have, and to express having, a liking for something just a bit musically obscure.
To the question "So what do you listen to...?" you'd better be prepared with an answer better than just "Oh, pop music. You know, The Rolling Stones, Mariah Carey, Wham. Anything like that really". Better to have something up your (record) sleeve such as "Well, recently I've go into early Trinidadian roots / late Austrian Baroque choral music / East Estonian Bazooki / Blackpool organ recitals 1935-37".

But, I suspect deep down, many of us have a place for some good quality pop as well as that Eskimo seal bone percussion act live CD we picked up on ebay for a small fortune. I'm wondering which tracks are wheeled out by those posting here.
For me, my fav' pop acts are (no great surprises I'm afraid:
The Beatles
Abba
BeeGees

Line 'em up fellas...!

As above really. HDTracks have long had a policy of not selling outside the US of A due to royalty arrangements/licensing. It was easily circumvented by paying with Paypal, therefore avoiding the need to register a delivery address.

Now they scan your IP address as you browse the site, thus determining what country you're in. Try to add an album to your basket and a window politely turns you away.

If you're like me, you probably don't buy that much from them (and then only with a coupon!), so it's not too hard to live with this.

However, it has already been reported that there are ways to mask your IP address quite easily, a quick google reveals them. If your browser is Firefox there is a free add-on called anonymoX which allows you to configure a profile for individual sites which obscures your location by using a proxy. It is perfectly feasible to configure a profile with US IP address for use on a particular website that insists on a US IP address, for instance.

Just sayin'.
:-\"

Me and the family took a walk in the spring sunshine yesterday, and I was treated to a real sonic surprise...

Not too far from where we live is Gloucester docks. Moored just outside the main basin is the Light ship 'Sula'. It's recently opened as a centre for alternative medicine, remedies, treatments (e.g. aromatherapy), etc.,... Not at all my sort of thing, but it is my wife's, and we thought the kids would like the ship, so we went aboard.

The ship and its businesses are owned and run by a Dutch couple, who turned out to be extremenly friendly and took me and the family on a tour of the Sula. The ship has been wonderfully refurbished with a shop, several treatment rooms and a training room (for meditation classes, tai-chi, etc.,...) and had a lovely atmostphere throughout. The highlight for me was our introduction to some 'Tibetan singing bowls'. Traditionally these are metalic bowls of various sizes (up to that of salad bowl), played simply by gently striking the bowl with a padded beater and then running the beater around the outside of the bowl to sustain the resonance. Each somehow produces a wide range of warm frequecies, many of which seem to be impossibly low for the size of the bowl.

However the singing bowl show was stollen by the modern variety of larger singing bowls, made of some technological magic with silicon and lasers. The sounds that these produced were gobsmacking. Amazingly loud (in the photo my 4 year old son is raising his hands to cover his ears), but in a comforting, deep and throbby sort of a way. The Dutch guy got several different sizes going at once and the harmonies that they created was remarkably moving.
They're not cheap (£250 - £450) but I want one!

I must see if I can find any recordings of these things as they would provide a stiff test for any hifi!
