ALAC now Open Source

Apple has loosened its reins on ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec). See http://alac.macosforge.org/post/welcome-to-the-apple-lossless-audio-codec-project/

So we Apple fans could start archiving in Apple Lossless, rather than FLAC - in theory, anyway.

  • Good news. I rip everything to Apple Lossless.
You can convert ALAC to anything else easily enough, or back to WAV without any data loss.

    That's true.

I do a variation on the Computer Audiophile Archival Doo-Dah, and rip an archive to FLAC and a live set to Apple format. That way the archive stays as an archive, unrecognised by iTunes and anything that uses iTunes as a library.

Also, to be purist about it, it's best to have the archive in a format in the Public Domain, as you have more chance of accessing those files in the long term.
  • Maybe we'll now start to see other stores selling decent hi-res ALAC downloads, along side their current FLAC ones. Such added convenience would make many download purchases a no-brainer - are you listing HD Tracks! ;-)
  • It would be good to see Apple selling Redbook ALAC downloads.
