The best sound anyone can get?

Healthily sceptical I am Dave. ;-)

"a tool that converts digital audio files into analog-sounding recordings"

Not sure what to make of that sentence. Does that imply that the naked Pono files sound digitally unpleasant and require corrective conversion? That won't sit well with we 'keep the audio chain simple' audiophiles. :-(

Also - takes care when typing 'naked Pono files'.
  • Neil Young was involved in developing HDCD (20 bit CDs) with Pacific Microsonics (now morphed into Berkeley Audio), so he is passionate about SQ and has form when it comes to getting things done.

Mind you, the last thing we need is another proprietary formate which need specialist hardware to playback. He can keep it AFAIC.
  • Wow...does that mean that finally a digital device has been invented that gets close to a pure analogue LP?  :))
  • Hmm. Maybe it will be OK if it has naked porno files
    @-)

    Just don't go there

It depends if we can just play back the files using, say, an updated Audirvana, or we need to have a load of proprietary hardware and software to go with it.

Quite frankly, I think it'll bomb if he tries to build a wall round it.
  • Have to admit that the more "high end" systems I listen to with ever more sophisticated Digital replay systems and ever more stratospherically priced DACs, I'll be honest and say that whilst good (they are that) to my ears, they're certainly no better sounding than a well recorded LP played back of a well set up high quality TT/Phonostage despite all of the technical arguments to the contrary.  What wins on paper can rarely be predicted in reality.   My initial response may have had a touch of humour about it, but it sums things up pretty well for me.  I do like and value all good formats though as its all about the music and very particularly about  the recording.  New formats have never excited me much for that reason.  Well recorded music on the other hand always has.
  • He is further along than I thought, he has made a prototype.

    Pono
  • Ahem! That's very like the page I started off with ;-)
  • D'oh! I didn't realise, I couldn't open the link where I was on Friday.

I had assumed your link was this one, which I had read earlier in the week.

As Americans say: "Never assume, it makes an ASS of U And Me". In this case just me.
  • Nope. I hadn't seen the one you linked to. So thanks for that.
  • Just Back from a Show in Holland, most where  using TT very few using digital or DAC's
    Nice real music.
