I'm commemorating Mandela's passing musically

edited December 2013 in Other music
I've had a morning playing Abdullah Ibrahim, particularly his 'homecoming' album Knysna Blue.

Have any of you been remembering Mandela? What have you been playing?

  • Listened to some LadySmith yesterday.
  • I was actually listening to 'Graceland' quite a lot last week , which goes some way towards this .

Unfortunately I had to break off from this and listen to Jazz Suite 'Under Milk Wood' - as we also lost ( almost unseen with all the fuss about Mandela ) Stan Tracey on Friday . One of the greatest jazz pianists, and greatest UK musicians of all time . Very sad.
  • I actually Tweeted about Stan's passing -not sure if it was the Chews acct or my own - but got so embroiled with South African jazz over the weekend that I didn't play Under Milk Wood or the duet album I have with Evan Parker.

    I need to rectify that.
  • Plus One to Graceland.. plus several Hugh Masekela records

Oddly enough, Nelson's passing reminds me of school  days - i missed a lot of basic mathematics because my teacher(s) were more inclined to teach us about apartheid and the ANC. We actually used to sing 'Free Nelson Mandela' in assembly!!
  • What a cool school. Wasn't something we'd have done at my place :-(
