Olympic Rugby 7s (Women's)

edited August 2016 in Other stuff
Really enjoying it.
And the Olympics overall. I'd forgotten how simply because it's the Olympics my brain can be engaged by any sport. (Ever the elitist, me :-D)
But the women's 7s has (shamefully) really surprised me. I haven't watched women's rugby for ages, the quality of the first tier teams (Oz, GB, Fiji, France and especially Nz) is brilliant. I am finding the conditioning/athleticism skill level and game nouce/awareness of the players genuinely captivating.

NZ v USA a really good end to day 2.
NZ never looked like losing to me, but USA showed the value of being well organised and determined.
GB v Nz semifinal tomorrow will be interesting.

  • I've been enjoying the fencing.
  • What did you think of the GB vs Canada 7s?

Seemed to me that our team got battered into submission by a team that were individually larger and tougher.

I think we had what's known as a "brain fart".
We'd beaten Canada 22-0 in the pool game the day before. In the bronze medal match we looked like a different team. My analysis would be that in the bronze match we looked less composed, less organised and less incisive. Whereas our superior skills, speed and support running saw us past the same Canadian players in the group game.
Possibly getting turned over by NZ in the semi final knocked our momentum / confidence / state of mind...? Or maybe one's mental wellbeing ebs and flows for reasons that are not clear and difficult to control for all but the best.
Competitive sport appears so often to have a significant component that is psychological.
NZ often appear to be the masters of this, but they too suffered their own psychological shambles in the final!

Saw a tiny amount of this...
  • As a final post, I really enjoyed the women's 7s.
A really good advert for my favourite sport, and for the Olympics. :-)

And now we have the men's competition to look forward to...

I saw a tiny bit of it, and as you said, the Olympics is when you watch stuff that you wouldn't normally watch.
