Spam

We seem to be getting loads over the past 48 hours.
I’ve been banning and deleting constantly.
Please ignore. Hopefully settings can be tweaked to return things to normal!

  • Dave’s gone behind a curtain and pulled some levers and turned some dials, and things seem a little better.
    Good work!
  • I've blocked the repeat offenders - in theory - but there's always a (very slight) worry I may have blocked members from posting, too
  • I am blocked now Dave can;t get into you bank account anymore poo
  • You’re the worst of them! :-D

There's nothing in my bank account!
  • Phew Ben got there first then?

  • 'Fraid so
  • Have you tried the add-on  "add a registration question"?
Seems that does the trick as the spammers can't be bothered to hack past that and pick on some other victim.
  • Btw Dave's bank account was emptied by The Hormel Food Company ;)

    Thanks Chris. It's already installed.

It seems they're getting past the Google ReCaptcha.

I won't be around tomorrow (Sunday), so I've blocked all new members from posting. That should stop the avalanche for the moment.
I've also updated Chews to the highest version of PHP offered by the host and upgraded Vanilla. I'll see if it was a Vanilla vulnerability when I allow new members to post.
  • Great work Dave.
I’m also seeing some funky new adverts.
Good to know your coffers are getting refilled. :-)

Is that the one that always leaves me thinking I mIght be a robot, as I get the answers wrong a few times?

You're seeing ads? I'm not. But there is a plugin that I switched off ages ago that would do that.

    That's the one!
  • Yup, I just started seeing banner ads too. Using Android.
  • I can't check that.
    No Android in the house.
  • OK. I've just tried something.

Can someone with an Android device check if they're still seeing ads?
  • Yes. I do...
  • I’m on iPhone.
Asda banner wants to recruit me as a “Mystery Shopper”.
  • Oh, balls. Thanks for looking.

My adblocker is obviously hard at work!

I'm starting to worry that the site may have been hacked, but I've run some tests and they are finding nothing.

I guess the next thing will be to remove the plugin entirely.
  • Anyone seeing ads now?
  • No. Not on my iPhone.
  • Sounds encouraging. Thanks Ben.

    Anyone else using mobile?
  • No ads now Dave! Well done!
  • Thanks, Alan

Now to see if the anti-spam measures are really working. Tin hats on, please.
  • Hi All I am sorry but I am back'

Is that your spam, Alan, or are you seeing real spam that I'm not seeing?

Here we go, I've taken the manual filtering out as I'm not getting anything to filter ;)
    Fingers crossed.
  • It's my spam, I haven't seen anything. Looking good!
  • BTW, if it helps to run the site, why not leave the banner ads up? I'm quite adept at ignoring them these days.
  • Thanks, Alan

I stopped running them for a reason, but it was so long ago I can't remember why. I suspect it was because they weren't making any money.

I may look into them again sometime in the future, but the main priority is to get Chews running properly again.
  • Call me Dave
  • I'll call you this afternoon, Col.
  • You can call me Al.
