    I don't know.
They're fairly recent (were on ninjatune for while iirc).
    That album is superb.
Not a bad track on it.

Edit...Yes. Apparently they very much are. Released their 7th album this year!

  • Thanks, Ben, for looking when I was clearly to lazy to! I thought I hadn’t seen anything recently, but I am clearly wrong!
IMHO, they’re the best of those keeping Afrobeat alive.

Never heard of them, noted. Speaking of afrobeat fusion:

    Came across this unexpectedly today.
It's a short video I took in The Black Cat in New Orleans a couple of years ago.
Me and my Dad had gone there together for a week's holiday. (During the video you see him paying for a drink at the bar.) The two of us spent the whole week enjoying music together. This was our last night.
He's dying of cancer at the moment, so this video has provided a route to some very happy memories for me today. I'm very glad I decided to suggest this trip to him.

Very sorry to hear this Ben, but equally relieved that you have treasured memories, far too many people treat life as if it’s a practice run and realise too late that we get one shot at it.

Also digging this the most, somewhat reminiscent of Polar Bear at points.

I missed the original post, for some reason, Ben.
    What a great memory.

More Cuba than Afrobeat? At least to my ears.

I've just listened to some of it on my laptop speakers. I'll definitely give it another go on something better!

    I can't agree more.

    It is Dave.
It's a place I'll keep revisiting for as long I live. So I'll get the chance to trigger them too.

Will give this a listen. Cheers.
  • I've been listening to this, Stephan Crump's Rhombal:
As much as I like piano, I think I like pianoless trios and quartets even more.

  • Joe Lovano - Sounds of Joy

I may have posted this before, but it's one of those unjustifiably obscure albums that I keep coming back to.

Strange. The video isn't showing here - Firefox on Linux. They are elsewhere on the page.
Anyway, we love dub (or at least Ben and I love dub), so great post!
  • edited June 2020
Of course, it may not actually be the best dub album in the world, this gives it some very stiff competition:

  • Hmmm, yes I noticed that the video presents in the link on your posts, but mine don’t.

It seems the trick is to just paste the URL and not make it a live link. As a plain URL, Vanilla seems to recognise it as a video and pull it in automatically.

I always go for Lee Scratch Perry, and on the UK side of things, there's Dennis Bovell's work on this:

    And the other volumes ;)

Just got this version of Santana 1 from the US, unplayed and still wrapped:

    https://www.discogs.com/Santana-Santana/release/1857153

Ripped to FLAC, definitely a great master of one of my favourite records, which wasn’t very well produced to begin with but it turns out one can polish a turd. I do own a US first issue LP of this, still in the factory wrapper but I’ve never been able to bring myself to open it, so bought a cd. I also bought the mofi 45 of this too. That’s enough Santana 1’s for now.
  • Shades of Time absolutely cooks on this version.
  • I'm not even sure I know the album.

Must see if it's on Spotify.
  • Yes do! It's a stonking album as is the following Abraxas.
  • Yeah, I know Abraxas.
  • Seriously, this master just has to be heard-tonally it’s much nicer than other versions, it was mastered by this guy:

    https://www.discogs.com/artist/535318-Kevin-Boutote

I don’t own a CD player, so just rip my stuff to FLAC. If any one wants to borrow this version for a listen do pm me.

I have the mofi abraxas hydrid sacd coming soon. Santana reputedly felt they’d not done the best job on the production of 1, and recruited a jazz specialist to work on abraxas. Apparently all previous issues had the channels accidentally reversed.

  • I just rip all my stuff to FLAC, too. I don't have a CD player. But, I had the thought the other day that I could connect my Bluray player to my preamp so when someone brings round a CD (as they do, occasionally) we could listen to it after a fashion. Must dig out a phono lead.
That's a generous offer about the CD.
It's amazing how many famous recordings have something wrong with them. Kind of Blue running at the wrong speed comes to mind.
  • Weather Report - I Sing The Body Electric

What a fantastic racket! I've had this album in one form or another since about '78, and it still gets better. I didn't like much of it when I first bought it.

There's almost a punk intensity to the drumming in some places. I know, keep on taking the tablets, Dave.

  • Not listening but watching; Satan and Adam on Netflix. Probably the best pair of street musicians still breathing.
  • I've noticed that on Netflix. I take it that it's worth watching?
  • uglymusic said:

Yes, as a documentary, it’s above average. They are an interesting duo. The bit that it does well Is to convey the total deference that Gussow shows to Sterling Magee. Sterling Magee is highly eccentric, but is an incredible player and really has insight into human nature.  Gussow paid major dues musically, choosing to stand full time on a street corner for 12 years in Harlem when it was a tinder box and he could have had an easy life.  The documentary doesn’t really get into the fact that Gussow is an outstanding player, but that’s the thing it does well. Gussow never regarded himself as Sterling Magees equal, he was his apprentice and felt he owed him everything. Quite topical really.

Thanks for that. I'll put it on my watch list.
  • Eddie Gale's death was announced today...

  • And a little Sun Ra because Eddie Gale was associated with him for many years:

Staying out somewhere on the edges of jazz I found this fantastic album by Evan Parker and Walter Prati:
    That's one track on YT.
    The whole thing's on Spotti:

  • Never really switched on to Sun Ra until now. I’ll give the rest a listen.
  • Glad you liked the Sun Ra. TBH, there's an awful lot of crap out there, so you have to keep on going to find the good stuff.
I really got into Sun Ra after I saw the Arkestra in Lewes last year, led by 96(?) year-old Marshall Allen. I'll remember that gig for a long time.
  • John Hiatt - Mystic Pinball

  • Miles Davis - Ascenseur Pour L'Echafaud
Maybe an outlier for most people's essential Miles, but I'd include this soundtrack in my list. It contains some of Miles' most emotional playing - he was happily in love with Juliette Greco in Paris at the time. Although the music isn't happy, by and large.

A bit of a John Hiatt fan here, don't have that one so will check it out.

For me, it’s one of the essentials. It feels as if it was done near to live in the studio. They get a great groove on, as much as any southern/country rock band does.
There are a number I haven’t got, but I’ve accumulated quite a bit over the years ;-)

  • Tomeka Reid Quartet

Another offshoot of the Mary Halvorson/Tomas Fujiwara NY jazz axis I've been liking for ages.
  • David Murray - Children
One of my favourite Murray albums made even better by the presence of James Blood Ulmer.

  • Micah Thomas - Tide
    I'm enjoying the album.
