Balanced vs Unbalanced

Would somebody be willing to explain what the pro's and con's are of a balanced circuit? What do people mean by 'truly balanced' as opposed to just balanced outputs? Oh and while I'm on a roll......is 'balanced' just a term relevant to amplification or can it be applied to sources as well?
