Parish notices - Audio Chews: the hi-fi and music community
Welcome to Audio Chews, the place where you can chew over hi-fi and music. You'll need to be a member before you can post. And there are a few rules you should be aware of, so please read Rules of this Community before you start posting. Oh, and we say 'community' deliberately, because the idea here is to provide a less confrontational environment than a forum.
  • IMPORTANT: Houston, we have a problem... (probably)
    • Yesterday, I posted:

Audio Chews is now on its new host and the DNS is propagating. If you can see this message, then you're still looking at the old server and you'll need to make your posts again on the new version.

But there's no sign of the migration happening. This could be because:
      1. The DNS change is taking its time - I have to leave it for 48hours, strictly
      2. There is a problem with the domain host
      3. There is a problem with the server set-up
My bet is that it's No 3, but I won't have any chance to set it up again until this evening at the earliest.

In the meantime, continue posting here as normal.

      Sorry about this, folks.

  • Moving hosts
    • I'm going to be moving Audio Chews to a new host sometime over the next 48hrs.

Hopefully the site will be faster and more reliable, but there may be some hiccups along the way.

Here's a photo of my son enjoying a DVD in bed.
It's a treat. Once a week on the weekend he gets to "watch a DVD in bed". Meanwhile, downstairs I watch a Bluray on my system, that costs more than a 100 times more than the portable DVD player in the photo. I'd say enjoyment levels are about the same..
  • Testing...
    • International Mic test day today: "12,12,12". The best time to test was just before quarter past twelve...

  • Problems posting from tablet browsers?
    • I've been having problems with my onscreen keyboard disappearing from my iPad mini screen sometimes when I go to type a post here on Chews.

I've now discovered it's a difficulty others have been having with other tablet browsers. I've narrowed it down to an interaction with the WYSIWYG editor plug-in we use here.

I've posted a request for help in the Vanilla Forums Forum, and hope I can get it sorted out soon.

In the meantime, has anyone else been having problems like this? And with what hardware/software?
  • Chews News is going weekly
    • Our monthly newsletter, Chews News, is going weekly. This means each issue will be more digestible as there will be fewer posts featured, so it should be more useful to you.

It will be scheduled for delivery at Friday lunchtimes (UK time), in time for the weekend.

If you don't want to receive Chews News, you can unsubscribe by clicking at the end of the newsletter.
  • BBC R&D music visualisation online trial - please take part :-)
    • I have a good friend who works in the BBC R&D department. He has worked on the development of various digital broadcast formats (e.g DAB and freeview). Knowing I'm into my music he forwarded to me an email from one his colleagues (not known to me) asking for help in the development of a music visualisation tool. I followed the link and took part. It was quite fun. :-)
I asked if I could open it up to some audio chums and was given the OK, in fact they're looking for as many responses as possible. If you fancy it, see below (I've copied the email text too, I don't know any more about this than is contained in the mail or the linked trial. Oh and hurry - the trial closes tomorrow.):

      Hello,

      I'm
currently running a trial to test out a method of Music Visualisation
for the Making Musical Moods Metadata (M4) Project, and I would really
      appreciate your participation.

      The
online trial can be completed by clicking on the link below and
following the instructions. It is not expected to take more than 15
minutes to complete. The trial should work on any browser that supports
      html5.

      Link to trial: https://bbcarp.org.uk/m4/VisTrial/BBCRDVisTrialIntro.html

Please pass this on to anybody else you think may be interested in taking part (inside or outside the BBC).

The trial will be active for a week, so the deadline for completion is 4pm Friday 26th October 2012, although I'm hoping that for some of you this might make the perfect Friday afternoon pre/post-cake activity!

If you have any questions or encounter any problems please let me know,

      Many thanks for your help,

      Becky

  • Using Audio Chews
    • The people who wrote the software that runs Audio Chews - called Vanilla Forums - made this video to help members understand how it works:

  • And the new winner of the TQ Green Loudspeaker Cables is...
    • As the TQ Green Loudspeaker cables weren't claimed by the original winner who only visited us once, we've had a new draw.

Step forward @NeilP, you no longer have to listen to your 1988 vintage QED 79 strand!

Please PM me your address and I'll send them to you.

  • TQ Green Competition Update
    • Thanks for your entries.

Just a quick note to say that I'll try to get the draw done over the weekend. There have been some family things going on over the past couple of weeks, so I need to clear a number of backlogs first.
