Your hearing: better than Fourier uncertainty principle?

edited March 2013 in Other hi-fi gear
An article discussing results of an experiement in time/freq and our perception of it, and why MP3 (and, by implication, digital to analogue conversion) has been on a hiding to nothing for years.

Article here.

In conclusion:
"Mr. Lee closes with this jab, "I don't have a lot of time for
audiophiles with gold-coated connectors and 'unidirectional' coaxial
cable, but this data is something I could buy into." But these findings
can also point to why different people, especially audiophiles who spend
a lot of time and energy just listening, may respond to the same hi-fi
gear differently since some people are more in tune with frequency,
others more in tune with time/timing, and others still perceive both
better than most and different hi-fi gear excels more and less in
reproducing these same values. It also helps explain why for some people
MP3s are good enough while for others they aren't"
Interesting comments at the bottom also.

  • I like it, using analog humans for digital music, cool.
  • Thanks Alan. I love psycho-acoustic stuff like that. Will attempt to digest it as well as I can over the coming weeks. Hopefully i won't come to the conclusion that what I actually need is an upgraded auditory system in my brain.
  • ...or that I need to upgrade my synapse connections to TQ jet-silk (or whatever Colin's latest construction is called ;-p ).
  • Hey DOC I have taken a leaf from Quad and now use wet string, as we seem to have lots of water here.
( Quad, a amplifier is a wire with gain)
  • Sparkling or still?
  • Sparkling is the only way, the bubbles add zing to the music!!
  • Alan the maths were a treat to read have you any more?
