There's a new RPi.

In celebration of our fourth birthday, we thought it would be fun to release something new. Accordingly, Raspberry Pi 3 is now on sale for $35 (the same price as the existing Raspberry Pi 2), featuring:

• A 1.2GHz 64-bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU (~10x the performance of Raspberry Pi 1)
• Integrated 802.11n wireless LAN and Bluetooth 4.1
• Complete compatibility with Raspberry Pi 1 and 2

10x faster is getting on for twice as fast as the RPi 2 (6x faster than the original).

Ordered a couple from CPC.

And they have arrived BUT.

It won't work with MoOde without some fettling so I'll wait a little for the software to catch up.

One interesting change on the new R3 is that the Ethernet and USB ports are powered from their own Rails rather than shared as in the 2.

I wonder if it's going to make a difference for those powering HDD/DACs from USB. (I have my DAC powered from a teradac 5V supply ATM).

I wondered about software compatibility. 

I've yet to check on the Volumio site to see where they are. I wonder if they'll just move to Volumio 2 if they're close to launching it.

I'm hoping that removing Ethernet and wi-fi from USB in the hardware will make the RPi even quieter. We'll see.

As I understand it (which is not very well)

the 3 needs changes to the player program but my knowledge of Linux is very limited.

Well, I've taken the plunge and ordered a 3, PSU and memory card.

I'm going to plant the IQ DAC on top tomorrow.

I've had Rune working but not tried Moode as the download is a little slow.

it does not boot with the standard players ATM as far as I know.

No Volumio as far a I can tell but maybe they are waiting until they have a more complete solution than just tricking the Software into believing it's a P2 it's dealing with.

Well, I planted the DAC on top and then got sucked into reading stuff on the Interwebs.

Looks like I'm going to install Rune Audio to get the RPi 3 working, but I may not have time to play until Easter.
