Rooms, hard floors and rugs

I've found that the positioning of the rug on the hard floor of my listening room has a significant effect on the imaging of my system (presumably the rug disrupts reflections off the floor, or some such). To an almost unbelievable degree in fact.
Anyone else experienced this?

    Family members are no bother Col. They live inside the speakers most of the time, so are generally out of the way.
