Background

edited April 2011 in Systems
There's a (real) window between and behind my speakers.
The system sounds best with the venetian blinds closed but the curtains open.
And, I'd say the blinds are best closed in an upwards slant. Though I can't do too much testing of this finer point without starting rumours in the street...
I have had a couple of drinks...

  • Not enough it seems.... <):)
  • Hi Alan,
are there terms & conditions before one can advertise items for sale? regards Al
  • No.

If we think you're selling anything dodgy, we'll take the ad down, but the contract is between buyer and seller. We make no money, nor take any responsibility.
  • Hi Al,

You can advertise here, no probs. Thanks for thinking to ask first!

It does seem to be dead at the moment though - high summer in general is like this.  I think I'd wait until early autumn before trying to sell anything here or on eBay.
  • Hi All, It is normally dead but we have had the best month ever, I was hoping for a rest, I must be really wicked .

    :-)
  • That's great news. Well done Col!

What that I am really wicked, oh poo.
  • Wicked, with your addiction to Bavarian pornshops...

Congrats on a great month, Col.

    Aha!

What you are hearing is the difference between absorption and diffraction :)
The curtains when drawn will act as absorbers at high and possibly mid frequencies (depending on the material).
Blinds will act as a diffusor.

Absorbers, as you might expect remove acoustic energy in the room which can be good or bad depending on the room in question. They will also reduce or prevent reflections and that its usually a good thing, though not always if you like a live acoustic effect.

Diffusors keep the in room energy levels pretty even but will also prevent strong reflections.
  • hi guys,
yip rooms and whats in them can have a great impact on sound , my small listening room has all double brick walls and an 18" thick concrete floor  and due to its dimensions has no less than 36 standaing waves ,when only the system is in the room, as i move down the room between listening seat and the system it is like someone is turning the bass up and down , at the worst point bass is down at -12db from 80hz and below ! at the hottest point its +4db at 60 - 30hz , this came as quite a shock , when all the furnishings are in the place the whole room stays within 4db across the affected bass region  , the left speaker resides beside a window that has blinds and how much the blinds are closed effects the balance of the soundstage ,blind fully open the left channel is louder in the upper mid and highs , no doubt due to the glass being good at reflecting this region of the audio band , with the blinds half shut things even out again ,
its quite easy to obtain acoustic foam panels in all shapes and sizes these days (there are even a few companies doing packs of various densities and styles and they even provide charts so you can buy frequency specific profiles to tune the room very accurately if you have some test tone files and an spl meter its quite easy to find the real offenders , some creative work with a pack or two can have a profound effect on the sonic presentation and look quite cool in a '2001 a space odyssey' kind of a way, i plan to do this soon  but a wee bit of decoration first to tie it all in visually ,
    all the best,
    matt

I see. So my ears want difraction and not diffusion. Is there a SS v valve kind of tribalism to fear here...?!
