Heybrook HB100 speakers?

edited February 2022 in Loudspeakers
Hello all. I was in a secondhand shop the other day in Limoges in Central France (I live in Correze) and I made an impulse purchase of some old UK made speakers, by a small company from Devon called Heybrook. The model is Heybrook HB100 (serial number 001001). I think they are now defunct but managed to find some info on the HB1and HB2 speakers but very little on the HB100. I'm guessing it is a later model as it look's like an early 90's design. They are in very good order, but the only problem I have discovered is that the plastic nuts on the four rear binding posts (for bi-wiring) are very worn in the plastic thread so they will not tighten up properly.I tried a pair of nuts off some Mission speakers but they appear to be about 4mm posts and on the Heybrooks they are more like 9mm?

Can anyone advise? Are there standard sizes of binding posts/nuts. The ones on the Heybrooks are pretty hefty. I would rather just replace the nuts with some metal threaded ones but don't know what size to order or where best to source? It's more work to replace the actual posts. I have tried banana plugs into the centre of the binding posts but they don't go all the way in?

For the speakers I think they are 100 watts and 6 ohm, but that's all I can find...is Heybrook stuff any good?

A link to some photos of the speakers and connections on the rear.

  • Hello,

The ones on the HB may have come from Cliff Components.

  • Hi Colin. Thanks for your helpful reply. The posts on the Heybrooks are bigger than M6. I measured with a micrometer and they came in at 9mm diameter. I looked at the ones on Farnell (who also have a French website) but couldn't find larger diameter. They do look very similar in design. Checked out Cliff UK but couldn't see anything that was the right size. Do you know anything about the speakers or company. They have a Facebook Page but not very responsive.
  • Having had a look at the Heybrook page on FB, I'm not at all sure if they are anything to do with the now-defunct company.

Someone may know the answer to your questions, of course.
  • I check a few I might have hidden away for a good day, we might be lucky, but they may be gold plated.
Mean while have a look here:-  https://www.actionhardware.co.uk/
  • I wonder if the serial number of your Heybrooks suggests a very early - even the first - pair of that model? I think the users group might be interested in that.

I suspect you'll be best off replacing all the binding posts with a modern equivalent to be honest. Or, a simple metal nut to clamp spades down? I doubt you'll find knurled ones.

Don't worry too much about the plugs not going in all the way, they often do not (it's just masked by the lip of the plastic nut). Newer binding posts would likely cure that.

Hi Alan. Thanks for the comments. I will probably have to replace the binding posts completely as I live quite remotely in France and there is nowhere around here where I could source the right size nuts. I have posted on the Heybrook Facebook page but no replies yet.
  • They are possibly not metric beware.
