Another speaker build...

This one's for the second system.
Decided I'd try the little brothers of the drivers in my main speakers.
Got started on the cabinets on the weekend, and today the Monacor SP-308CX coaxial drivers arrived.
Thankfully they fitted perfectly into the holes I'd already cut.
Next is finish drilling the cabinets, and then spray them.

  • You like those Monacors, by the look of it.
  • Does the foot have a significant effect on the sound? o:)

    I do.
    They’re like Tannoys. But good.
The horn HF unit has great dynamics and the bass unit is tight and articulate. At least on the 10 inch versions. We’ll see about these smaller ones…

It’s a patented design feature, Dave.
  • Nahhh Dave, Ben is messing with our heads, it's really an occasional table with ultrasonic plate and cup holder built in.

As for the foot, that's the only way to get toe-in for upwards firing units.
Yup, let's all groan together ;)

Tannoys can be good. Occasionally  ;)

I lived with DC2000s for a while back in the day and loved 'em. So I guess I'd like those Manacles  :p

I wish I'd thought of that!

Yes. In fairness, this dual concentric journey was inspired by the vintage Tannoy Eaton's I bought (and then sold) a few years ago. Plenty of potential!

I suspect this may have come up in posts connected with your earlier build, but I notice they seem to be designed for PA use. That kind of starts to exercise my audiophile prejudices  ;)
  • You are right Dave.
I was initially sceptical. But they sound good to me.👍

    Cool.
  • ATC were born in the studio/PA world. They do some great domestic kit.

    Trudat!
  • I’m not sure what Monacor’s origins are. They seem to make all sorts.
I’ve never been disappointed with any of their drivers that I’ve tried (mainly tweeters).

Btw, I stupidly ordered small 330ml can of primer, so didn’t have quite enough.
    Have ordered some more.
Spent this morning making up the crossovers.
  • Fruits of my labours so far.
As you can see priming of cabinets is incomplete. Waiting for more primer...

  • Looks like good crossover work there, Ben.

It is good practice to have the inductors on one board sitting on different planes to each other.

    Thus...

    I sir, am a contrarian.
  • Good for you! A shame I didn't use the phrase "It is convention...", would have been a better fit with your response.

    Meanwhile...

  • Understood!👍
(they don’t look as nice though, do they?)
  • Are we applying WAF to crossovers now? >:)
  • Thing is, these speaker are for the conservatory / garden. That’s outside my domain.
  • You have a domain????
  • It's all in your own minnnnnnd :#

  • Nah. There's nuffink in my mind :/

I hope that vortex was swirling on a plane perpendicular to that of the nearest swirling vortex.
  • No, silly. You can't put record players on their sides!

:-/ I distinctly remember my mate’s Dad owning this back in the 80s…

  • The CJ-mod.
Quite difficult to check in an according way...

I didn't know Mitsi made those, Sony, Sharp, Philips I remember. Some new efforts around too, I think Pro-Ject have/had one...checking, checking....

    Ooh yeah, funky

The ayes have it! (LIving on the ceiling, no more room down there)

Is there a reason for vertical turntables? Except for amusement, of course.

And how does that arm work?

  • We have sound.
Just beta testing at the moment. (I'm still waiting for the acoustic foam to line the cabinet, and I need to trim the port.)
    But... not too shabby.
My main relief is that the balance between the drivers is fine. And the smooth and dynamic presence of the HF horn unit that I like in the 310 is evident in these smaller versions. For me that's their main attraction. Bass is inevitably less. But fine for an 8 inch.
I went for a similar crossover configuration to the larger DIY ones beneath. I usually attenuate the HF unit by ear. From scratch. But I consulted the specs for the 308s and the LF unit is 1dB lower relative to its HF unit than the larger 310 versions, so I simply adjusted the L-pad design at which I arrived for the 310 speakers. I'm not going to spend any time tweaking it. These speakers are destined to sit on the floor, right next to each other in the conservatory. So finessing the design seems pointless.
I hate the colour. But that was the wife's choice.

    Indeed!
  • Well done!
What is the colour, some kind of dark reddy brown?

    Indeed!

"The tonearm has a special spring that allows it to track the record with the right downward force that actually works well during play."

    I.e. spring loaded VTF.

PLUS it's wall mountable and is available in a left handed version.... :o

So Ben, are you going to infiltrate some secret naval base with your mini-subs. ( yes, I know they're full range... hang on, does that mean they go further ;) )

Sounds like a recipe for dropping expensive vinyl. And, I'm not sure about those springs (that spring?).

    In the right light, yes.
In the wrong light, more like a pooey brown.

    Political correctness gone mad.
  • Now in place.

Sound much better in here, weirdly.
I've noticed before that any speaker placed close to the "wall" in the conservatory gets a huge uplift in...I'd guess...the 90Hz region.
Great that the Claymore now has some decent friends to play with.

They actually look right for a conservatory in earthy ( aka pooey ) brown!
I think Mrs Ben had the right idea.

Hmmmm, Claymore, earthy, a little magic in the sound......

    Could it be....

The Sword in the Stone ( aka anvil )

Are you Arthur? The true born king of all Britain!

    What sorcery is this?!
  • Some wonderful connections there. :-D
