  • OMG!!! I'm really going to have to do it  :)
  • Let me throw a few ideas into the ring...

Elton John - Madman Across The Water
    Steely Dan - Pretzel Logic
Little Feat - Feats Don't Fail Me Now
    Weather Report - Heavy Weather
    Jaco Pastorius - Jaco Pastorius
    Joni Mitchell - Hejira
Charles Mingus - Blues And Roots
John Coltrane - A Love Supreme
Alice Coltrane - Ptah The El Daoud (probably)
Mahavishnu Orchestra - Birds of Fire
    Gateway - Gateway
Jan Garbarek - I can't recall which one, but one of his albums from the very late 70s to mid-80s
Ornette Coleman - Of Human Feelings
Keith Jarrett - The Koln Concert
    Bobo Stenson - War Orphans

These aren't their best albums, or even my favourite by the artist. They're just the ones that started me down that artist's path or into a different musical backwater.
  • At least 4/5 albums I missed there!
  • I reckon you probably know between six and eight of them, from conversations here.
  • Crikey, a can of worms!

    I'll start with stuff that immediately jumps to mind;

BJH - Everyone is Everybody Else
    Genesis - Foxtrot
    Deep Purple - In Rock
    Black Sabbath - SBS
    ELO - Face the Music
    Tangerine Dream - Stratosphere
Yes - Close To The Edge
    Santana - Abraxas
    Holst - Planet Suite
    Korsikov - Shaherazade
    Strauss II - Blue Danube
    Blue Oyster Cult - epon.
Stevie Ray Vaughan - Couldn't Stand the Weather
    Camel - Mirage
    CCR - Cosmo's Factory
    Focus - Hamburger Concerto
    INXS - Listen Like Thieves
Jackson Brown - Lawyers in Love
    Jethro Tull - Stormwatch
    JJ Cale - Grasshopper
    JL Hooker - The Heeler
Joe Satriani - Not of this Earth
    Kate Bush - Never Forever
    Optic Tentacles - Pungent Efulgent
    Pink Floyd - Relics
The Prodigy - Fat of the Land
The Stranglers - No More Heroes
Penguine Cafe Orchestra - Signs of Life
Thin White  Rope - The Ruby Sea
    REM - Document

I don't think that covers it at all, more thinking required.

  • Wow! And there lies a completely different set of influences, Chris!
  • Seminal albums 2:

    Pat Metheny - New Chautauqua
    Ralph Towner - Solo

More to come, no doubt  :)

  • Wow great responses. See now I was remiss in not naming albums! You guys are so much better at this than me.
cj66: recognize a few there, Yes,Camel,Santana,Jackson Brown and Holst.
UM: just the one, Talking Heads.
Fascinating to see other peoples influences.
Will try harder! and post more soon :)
  • OK, I admit it. From William Parker downwards, they're a bit obscure. But that's the way I roll!  ;)  B)

I was going to include a PIL album, but I realised that another album led to it. So it's not in my third list.

GYBR was the first album I bought.
  • I'm reasonably sure the first new album I purchased was Seconds Out by Genesis but definitely not a defining album for me as I was already well down that road.

Some peeps are surprised by my Led Zep moment above. Although I was familiar with Stairway....(impossible not to be) and Whole Lotta Love (via Top of the Pops theme) they had pretty much passed me by until then. Thence IV, III, II, I etc.

While on show themes, The Old Grey Whistle Test's usage of Stone Fox Chase lead my curiosity to investigate American country/folk tinged music, nothing else from the authors, Area Code 615, appealed.

  • Your point about Led Zep is a bit like my Elton John thing. I knew Madman Across The Water somehow but bought Goodbye Yellow Brick Road because it was the latest and had the singles I was hearing on it.
