LS35a V RCL Small Loudspeaker ????
In 1981 / 2 I auditioned the LS35a at Grahams in London .
I loved the naturalness , but they seemed less than dynamic with distortion in the bass .
Grahams showed me a tiny specialist speaker created by SEAS , the Norwegian speaker makers to show off their drivers and imported or constructed by RCL , the SEAS importers .
They insisted that they are equal to the LS35a - but different and just £122 , not double that !
I loved them and still do although they don't do quiet and love to be thrashed by a good amp and demand 1st class ancillaries like my Pink Triangle / Orion / Grace f9e PT PIP pre and EAR 509s .
They have less bass , [ ported ] but it is more tuneful and clear .
I have taken them in , over the years , to attempt to find something appreciably ' better ' and settled on Magnaplanar SMGa's which , inevitably died .
Mine are being repainted in matt black once again with new translucent bronze fabric over velcroed card ' frames ' so as not to upset the balance too much .
Maybe I don't worry about all the things which Hi-Fi people talk about , but these tinys 330 high do opera / choral etc as if it's alive .
... and I think that I have just bought another pair - of bigger sisters -
Advertised on e-bay simply as speakers Made in Norway , they look identical in structure to my RCLs , but 430 high , and rosewood finished - I bought them for £27 with post as no one seemed to know what they could be .
SEAS even today offer kits of their speakers , so it's not inconceivable that a Norweigian manufacturer made these speakers with the next size up volume .
For me , this is a once in a lifetime find - even if I have to have Wilmslow Audio sort them out for me !
