Is the 'pleasurize music foundation' still going? They had an anti compression campaign, and sponsored a plugin for foobar which measured the dynamics on a given track or album.

That plugin has expired and I would like another one!

Wasn't aware of the "pleasurize music foundation" Alan. probably because I wasn't looking at the time!  I've been asked to do a number of music reviews for a few sites and the odd publication and some of the CD and vinyl LP's are pretty shocking (bad), so I say so.  Personally, I hunt out those well mastered (anything from the Opus 3 sacd lable) and older CD's.  Much of my classical collection is vinyl and well recorded so hard to beat.

I think the line is being drawn wrongly in the sand. There are plenty of good sounding up-to-date CDs in my collection. I think it's also down to the label and the production budget once you get away from chart material.

I really don't believe old is best unless it's for chart material. And then, I'm going to sound elitist here, I don't really care.

There's plenty of good new CD's Dave, so not really disputing that.  I think the point is that early CD releases were made almost universally with far less compression, whereas today you do need to pick and choose more carefully. Also, it's not just chart material that suffers.  I have some classical, blues and Jazz releases all of which are compressed, but yes, pop tends to suffer the most.
