Recorded just before Agharta and Pangaea, on first listen this doesn't quite measure up to the huge slabs of ugliness they deliver. But I'm going back for another listen ;-)
In a general sense possibly, though I'm not sure either outfit would be especially pleased with the comparison... There must be some similarities as I like both. =D>
That Snowboy one is probably more your thing Dave. It's quite ugly at times... Pretty at others.
If you don't have this and the two other albums she made for Real World, go sell the cat, dog, gerbil or even the SO. She pushes the possibilities of the human voice without ever becoming willfully avant garde.
I like contemporary dance, and the Richard Alston choreography to Les Illuminations transfixes me and makes me sob. I can't not see it in my mind each time I hear this. Perhaps that is the equivalent of flowing juices ;-)
was watching THX 1138 the other evening (Lucas' first film?) because of recommendations on its use of sound. So a few tracks on this album inspired by that film are making different sense this time round.
Ok, I feel a bit funny about this one.... Aimee Mann "Bachelor No.2". Mostly because, as much as I often enjoy this album, it all feels a bit radio 2! But am currently making apple pie from windfalls, so maybe feeling a bit middle-aged and middle class today? ;-)
Anyway, keep coming back to it because several songs on this album are used in Magnolia, which is in my top 20 of favourite films and her music is absolutely integral to it throughout. So instead of giving you the album link, here is my cheerful little offering of the day... (if I can remember how to do youtube links that is!)
This is the kind of avant-garde jazz that could only come from Chicago. God, that last sentence makes it sound UGLY. But, to my mind, it largely isn't. Lots of tunes and textures here.

It keeps getting pushed back from the front of my to do list!
80s music is all shithouse...?! Nah.
B-)
Always pleased to dig this one out again!

Not always in the mood for this. But, today I am.

Always reminds me of Dickens' Bleak House.
