This is fabulous. A duo recording that doesn't turn in on itself, excluding the listener from a private conversation.
Bassist William Parker and Alto player Oliver Lake play with real authority yet sound relaxed. Unbelievably, this is the first time they've played together on record.
And, who's Roy? Trumpeter Roy Campbell, who left the body in January of last year.
Re KonKoma... Pah! No time to audition... Thanks Dave, on your recommendation X_X I have just a cheapish promo copy of the CD from DIscogs. I await it's greatness...
Seriously, it looks right up my street. Thanks for thinking of me! =D>
A kind of an electro dub thang. It's OK. 6.2/10 ...? The dub and the electro parts seem to be less than, rather than more than, the sum of their parts more often than I'd like, but it's never offensive.
Now, in contrast to the above, this is definitely more than the sum of its parts. I can't say that I actually like what the drums, bass, keyboards are voice are doing, but all together...Nice. I can see why this is so well reviewed. Nice vibe to it. Have just notced that I was born right in the middle of its recording too. A little personal connection there... B-) 7.1 / 10. (EDIT - revised up to 7.2 / 10 following badgering from Dave)
(And yes, I've started scoring albums out of 10. Let's own these toonz!)
I don't think I have any albums that I could award higher than a 9.5. A 9.5 / 10 album would be this one from Cymande (my musical heroes)...
Simply in my opinion, it feels like I need about 2.4 points of headroom to separate Winter in America from Second time Round, so about 7.1 feels right to me. Although that I think that makes Second time round 34% better than Winter in America. Which seems a bit high. Feels more like about 31% better. Which means I should amend my Winter in America score to 7.25. 2 decimal places seems too much, so I'll call it 7.2 (7.3 just feels to high to me).
What would be your score for Winter in America Dave?

Thanks Alan!

I was driving at the time, I had almost 200 miles to do so I couldn't log in to Chews to let you know.
I'm glad Dave got my quick text to you. That's teamwork, that is.
Your vigilance and kindness spread ripples beyond me...
And yes. They were great on the show!
Thanks again.
But, *ahem* as FLAC files...
:-B
However, I imagine that there is little point in listening to it without at least one 18 inch bass speaker in one's system...

8.2 =D>
Unusually, an album that I enjoy as much as it's dub version! (Both on the rip of the CD. >- )
