  • David Sylvian - Brilliant Trees.
And very wonderful it is, too :-)
Absolutely - and a certain Mr Danny Thompson on bass on track 2 (seeing his name on the bass thread spured me to listen to it). :)

Keith Jarrett, Koln Concert. (24/96 download from HDtracks)

    With a glass of Jameson's.
    :O

    Flip' me....
    ^:)^

Dac seems to like this one too.
  • No more crackles?
  • It's not a 'hot', or loud mix, is it? It is Dynamic for sure, but not like that Buble (we play that because my 5 yr old loves it). On the natural stuff, the Young is just....well, you probably know. I'm possibly finding the air a little thin up here.

But piano is a bugger for DACs - remember that discussion somewhere else about piano distortion on certain DACs.

I've played a fair range of music and not found any crackles. But I'll make sure I play some rock and some big band stuff next.
  • It's the best I've heard Piano by a long shot - and I thought my rig was very decent before. It seems to be a simple loudness issue.

  • If it is a simple loudness issue, then the overload problem could be the cause.

It's just strange that I've not encountered in so far.

Could you perhaps give me a list of recordings that cause trouble and I'll see if I have them.
  • Two obvious ones:

Dr John, I'm gonna go fishin'

Michael Buble, It had better be tonight.

They'll be on spotify for sure, though that might not answer anything. I haven't looked for too many more tracks as these are perfect for repeating the issue time & again. When I want to listen, I've avoided the lairy stuff.

Bass is fine now, in whatever USB socket I use. Could have been one of those imaginary burn in things..
  • I don't have either of those.

    Other suggestions, please?

I am too relaxed to think - let me see:

    from memory, try

Dave Grusin, West Side Story; Something's coming

John Mayer, Heavier Things; Something's missing.

I doubt you have them either..

    :P
Some albums I expect an issue with are fine though!? Just try loud, modern mixes I guess.

    Enough playing - goodnight!
  • Nope. None of those.

I'll try the Red Hot Chilli Peppers tomorrow.

That might do it. In defence of some modern compressed mixes, their SQ can be excellent. Most Dave Grusin stuff falls into this bracket - still very dynamic though. Most exiting to listen to. My Young has no problem with most music though. Very odd.

( PS - I am back because I just checked the weather - I'm not working tomorrow now. But I'm off now.)
  • More rain tomorrow?
  • Mornin'. I just swam back from the post office...
  • Bob Florence Limited Edition - Magic Time.

Strangely enough, I have to swim to said establishment, too.  X_X
  • Bob Florence Limited Edition - Magic Time.
I'd never heard of him until I Spotified him. Have this playing ATM:

which is quite jolly, but I may need a blast of:

later, just to balance it out :-)

Good choice the the Grusin WST - some superb arrangements on that album, and as always with DG the playing is stunning (except the really sharp trombone player on lead in 'One Hand, One Heart').

    Good choice. :)

Another good one is All The Things You are off the State of the Art album. Being a Clarinet player I just love Florence's use of Contrabass Clarinet underpinning the Bari Sax line in his arrangements - gives such great depth to the sound colour. :)
  • Contrabass clarinet being pitched below a bass clarinet?
  • Contrabass clarinet being pitched below a bass clarinet?
Yup - there are 2 versions, one pitched in E flat, the other B flat. The E flat one is a fifth below, the B flat (which I've played occasionally) is an octave...you don't so much hear it as feel it! :D

    There's also a sub-contrabass but that's just getting silly. :)
  • We're getting into Anthony Braxton territory here.

Shhh - that's enough about contraband clarinets - we'll get shut down by the woodwind police! They're already after Gromit for crimes against marching music...

WRT WST (don't see those abbreviations together often) - It's all good but I love 'I feel pretty'. Makes me think of Ron Burgundy playing Jazz flute in Anchorman...

  • You feel pretty do you?  :O
  • And witty. And....

    Full up after lunch!
  • Anyway, I'm off to get wet while you have a good preen  :)
  • Jack Dejohnette - Oneness
  • Led Zeppelin - III
  • Dread Zeppelin – Un-led-Ed  :)

Excellent - haven't heard that in ages
  • Neither had I!
  • You know I really can't bear Mobley - not sure what it is it just doesn't work for me.
  • He's OK. Just another one of the Blue Note hard bop crowd. This is what Spotify is great for. I don't actually have to have any of that stuff on my Drobo ;-)

Give me Wayne Shorter any day.
  • Very true.

And quel surprise - I like Shorter :)
  • Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Californication
  • Quincy Jones - The Dude.
  • Quincy Jones - The Dude.

    Blimey.  That takes me back
    B-)
  • Buddy Guy - Damn Right I've Got The Blues
  • Tea Boys - Scratch Mixes

Buddy Guy - Damn Right I've Got The Blues
You've mentioned that one before  - I love this stuff. I suspect I should get this one. Didn't he play on Muddy Water's 'Folk Singer'?
  • You should get it, it's fantastic.  Heard it on so many systems over the years and it's always enjoyable for me.

Not sure about the Muddy Waters link.  He's the right age so maybe.

Interestingly Clapton's favourite guitarist is Buddy Guy.
  • Dave Holland - What Goes Around.

I can't imagine a more different guitarist to Clapton than Buddy Guy! He was on Folk singer, so says this link:
