  • Mark Hollis - Mark Hollis
  • Grdina/Motian/Peacock - Think Like the Waves
  • Keith Jarrett - Koln Concert - 24/96

    Foobar says it's 2489 kbps
  • Hmm. I'll try to remember to check what the Young says later - I think it's 96.

Whatever the reason, it's not up to the quality of the more modern ECM recordings on HDtracks, and there are the reported problems with the piano.
  • John Abercrombie/Eddie Gomez - Structures

As I slide inexorably towards my dotage, Abercrombie seems to overtake everyone else (well, maybe not Bill Frisell, it depends on the day) as my fave guitarist. This is much more mainstream than his fantastic quartet with Mark Feldman, but Abercrombie is riveting.
  • John Abercrombie - Timeless

I don't hear a problem with the piano on the Koln Concert on either Red Book or 24/96.  What do you mean?
  • Timeless was my first ECM purchase, I think. I don't have it on CD :-(

The story goes that Jarrett almost didn't go on because of severe back pain and the promoter not delivering the agreed Steinway concert grand. The piano was substandard and not tuned to Jarrett's satisfaction. If you listen to what he plays, it's mainly in the middle register, apparently because the extreme notes were unplayable.

I think the story is in Ian Carr's biography of Jarrett. I can't check, because my copy is in storage.
  • Interesting story.  It never occurred to me until you mentioned it, now I can hear it.

  • I've got this one LP of his.  Had it for years, got it S/H and not in the best of nick.  Plays well.  On the Prestige label.

    Nice sound.
  • Apparently he was Lester Young incarnate, and made an elpee with Mr Coltrane. Well, I never!

I bet Porcupine Tree were a bit good!

I'm digging out Deadwing right now
  • I've got Shelby Lynn The Definitive Collection.  Doesn't get played that often but I do enjoy it.

Are my ears numb, or is For Alto not half as horrible as its reputation suggests?
  • It's a wonderfully tuneful and sonorously romantic piece of music

  • I think it is, a few may agree.  Most would not.
