  • Ketil Bjørnstad – Seafarer`s Song

You may like this one as well @Alan. Another bit of Scandinavian stuff.
  • Robert Wyatt - Shleep
  • Little Axe - The Wolf that House Built
  • Ketil Bjørnstad – Seafarer`s Song

I will give this a go also. Did you know I'm half Scandinavian? I can fit into a flat box for easy re-assembly...I guess that's why I'm called Alan too.
  • Is that why you act as if you have bits of your brain missing?  :D

    (Did you ask for that?)
  • no! :-w

We invaded once before, and whupped yo' asses, remember? (is that how Vikings speak?)
  • Oh yeah.

They seem to have left something behind, though
    :ar!

Brad Mehldau – Live In Marciac

@Alan. If you like Keith Jarrett's solo work, this is well worth a listen. It's much better than anything else Mehldau has done solo, IMO.

As with most (all?) of his albums, the choice of covers is inspired. He treats Kurt Cobain's Lithium seriously, in contrast to The Bad Plus' demolition of Smells Like Teen Spirit.
  • Thanks for that - it looks a nice recommendation.

  • No problem.

It may feel like a determined attempt to put you in penury, but I keep on seeing stuff you might like.
  • I appreciate the thoughfulness - Jazz in particular seems to be a journey, I just need an accessible place to jump on. I really want to 'get' it, I'm sure it will come in time.

Jazz is a journey, one I've been on for the last 35 years. One album and/or performer and/or gig leads to the next one, as you assimilate it bit by bit.

Most people find their way in via their parents' record collection, so are often steeped in the classics of the music. It didn't work that way with me. I started listening to the stuff that was around at the time and also went to live gigs. I worked back to the classics over time.

The way I got into jazz and this idea of jazz as a journey are a couple of the reasons why I continue to explore the music that's happening now.
  • Art Pepper - Meets the Rhythm Section

So many people's top Pepper choice. Personally, I find it disappointing. Pepper was apparently strung out and perhaps using a borrowed horn. Whatever the reason, he seems hemmed in, playing within limits and Miles' Rhythm Section aren't right for him, never doing their thing at their best.

YMMV. I know I'm in the minority here.
  • Mussorgsky/Ravel: Pictures at an Exhibition (Philadelphia/Muti)
  • Atomic - Feet Music

    The Scandinavian stuff continues.
  • Anat Fort - A Long Story

Let's start the day with some dub. Music that's messed with, but Bill Laswell knows what he's doing, unlike some other producers and artists we've been listening to!

Bill Laswell - Version 2 Version: A Dub Transmission

Seriously, there's no sign of overload or unwanted distortion.
  • Charlie Haden's Private Collection No 2

Just arrived this morning on double vinyl.... (also with a free CD version)

Josh T Pearson - Last Of The Country Gentlemen (nothing like Kanye West)
    :D
  • David S. Ware – Live In The World

The album that got me into David S Ware. The living heir to Coltrane, IMHO.
  • Fred Hersch/Bill Frisell - Songs We Know
  • Food - Veggie

From the Scandinavian School of Silly Noises :-)
  • Sugarcubes - Stick Around For Joy
  • Dream City Film Club - In The Cold Light Of Morning on vinyl
  • At the moment...

    ELO - New World Record

    earlier...

ELO - Out of the Blue

    70's-tastic!! :)

  • Ernest Ranglin - Below the Bassline

  • I don't have that one.

    Are you enjoying it?
  • I am, I'm listening to the (almost complete) album on spotify based on a recommendation. It's very modern, and he sings along like like Keith Jarrett. In fact, in my naivety, I think there are similarities between their playing.

It's not too challenging so while I think you would enjoy it - it won't rock your world. I'm going to listen to some more of his after this.
  • Mary Halvorson Trio - Dragon's Head

Still being amazed by the originality of Halvorson's playing. Must buy more :-)

You're absolutely right on all counts, Alan.

I have a number of EST albums and while I play them from time-to-time, the only one I really like is the last one, Leucocyte, because I think they'd really hit on something with all the processing of what apparently was live playing in the studio. A bit more challenging than their other albums.
  • I will listen to that album as well, as it was also recommended. I am listening to him playing Monk right now, which is really easy going. Very easy to work to.

This is probably the type of thing to ease me a little further into modern jazz without challenging the pain barrier too much....
  • Is that from the album of Monk covers? Can't remember the name off-hand.

If it's doing it for you, go for it! A lot of people (even some of the Jazz Police) like EST.
  • AC/DC - Highway to Hell.
  • Henri Texier - Mosaic Man

Talk Talk 'Laughing Stock' - not only some of my favourite music, but such a fantastic recording.

Earlier. IQ 'The Wake.Live' and 'The Wake' and 'Tales from the Lush Attic', some neo prog nostalgia, Slightly surprised how much I am enjoying them at the moment. I always preferred them to the Marillion and the other 80's prog bands.
  • Back Door - Back Door
  • Bjork - Debut
  • Qunicy Jones: The Dude
Qunicy Jones: You got it bad girl
    Yello: Touch
    Donald Fagen: The NightFly
    Kings of Convenience: Versus

    mmmmmm, I love music!
  • Charlie Haden/Paul Motian/Geri Allen - Etudes

One of my absolute favourite piano trio albums.
  • Horace Silver - Song for my Father
  • Hugh Hopper - Hopper Tunity Box

I used to have this in vinyl. The digital version is much cleaner and more enjoyable to listen to.
  • Grace Jones - Hurricane
