An absolutely seminal album for me. I bought it when I was at university, and it opened up whole new vistas of jazz. Not quite free, but a long way away from mainstream jazz.
Another one on it's first play, having been ripped a while ago. I was wondering when I would get a duff Lyle Lovett album, and this still isn't it! I have seven now. I am astonished by his consistency & charmed by his wit still, and each album is beautifully produced.
I like a fair proportion of the album, particularly the first couple of tracks. It's when he does that plodding rhythm section thing so beloved of country artistes that I start looking for the exit sign.
Joshua... is one of the finest productions I have ever come across in pop music, not that spotti will show it. I also like to tease my wife with the refrain on the the first track.

All together now:
"Sally, she had BIG ones!
Shelley had some too....

You'll like the story from 'Church' too, but tracks like 'She's already made up her mind' and 'Family reserve' are quite moving, and profound imo.
