    Great album.
  • Been up the loft and got to upload a few Zeppelin boots on the hard drive, at one point I had every live show available! anyway here is one of my favourites and its currently on the playlist, Earls Court 25th May 1975 from the soundboard complete show

  • And this ones up next for me

Much better than I'd expected. There's some very nice tenor playing from Joe Lovano and Joey Baron shakes up the more straight-ahead and ballady pieces with some really intelligent drumming.
  • Not in the slightest bit ugly:

  • Possibly my favourite band from the last few years:

    image

Atomic - The Bikini Tapes. 3CDs of live pretty high-energy jazz.
  • jazz on 3, Charles Lloyd and his quartet, magic , should be on play it again via the r3 website from tomorrow, check it out, twas a damn fine performance.

Great. Thanks for that Matt. I try to listen to each week's Jazz on 3 on playback.

That is some band - I have some of the CDs. I love the way that Jason Moran still plays with other top-flight outfits as well as plays solo and with his own trio. With apologies to Col, Moran is a fantastic pianist.

If you've ever liked Afrobeat, buy this album. It's almost as good as Fela Kuti at his best.
  • And, talking of Charles Lloyd, as we were. Nirvana! (And no Kurt Cobain in sight :-) ):

  • The Core - The Indian Core:

    image
  • Craig Taborn - Light Made Lighter

Bill Bruford with Ralph Towner & Eddie Gomez - If Summer Had Its Ghosts. Nice, undemanding album. Probably better than I expected. Towner and Bruford work well together - a bit of a surprise.

The Lounge Lizards - Queen of all Ears. Probably their best, but what do I know? ;-)

One of the big hitters in the jazz world, sales-wise, it seems. He doesn't really cut it for me, not when there are Jason Moran and Craig Taborn out there, let alone Keith Jarrett - or even Abdullah Ibrahim.

Warning to Col. I'm talking about pianists here ;-)
  • Aint played this one for ages, has some really nice stand up bass on the opening track

Yup. This one again. No apologies. It's a minor masterpiece. All jazz fans should have a copy, IMO.

The Fully Celebrated - Drunk on the Blood of the Holy Ones.

Jazz harpists. The only other one I can think of is Alice Coltrane.

I can honestly say I've never heard of her! So I'd guess that's from the 50s sometime?

Edit: Here it is on Spotify Dorothy Ashby – Hip Harp (Remastered), where there are two other albums as well. This one's from 1959, the year when it all happened in jazz.

I'll give it a listen later.

What I'm actually listening to. Keeping me from Dorothy, so to speak!

Nice to hear Motian and Peacock with a guitarist rather than a pianist.
  • While the neighbours are out!

Thanks for the tip, matt. I've played and liked all her albums on Spotti. The last one - can't remember the title - was most to my taste on one play of each.

Unreleased Art Volume 1. Bootleggy recording, but the playing is fantastic!

FWIW, I have and like Combustication, but don't have EOTWP. That'll have to wait for my next MMW spree! :-)

'zat the music or the gear?

Looks really odd to see MMW on that historic label on vinyl. I've only ever seen them on CD, would you believe?
  • hey Dave ,
the LP arrived today , the arm has just had a rewire, they both deserve an oooh and an aahh,,
i was surprised to see MMW on bluenote vinyl too, EOTWP is on a different label ! they are a rare find on vinyl, hopeing for some reissue action at some point , combustication cost me more than a hi rez download and the cd and a cuppa from starbucks combined, might have to drop them an email , it worked with beck ! dropped him an email and posted on his site saying i was a little hacked off at the lack of vinyl action , he replied and said he would get on it,, sure enough 3/4 months later all the stuff he had done that didnt make it to vinyl suddenly appeared !! now thats listening to your fans.
    going on now,image
    all the best

    Ouch!

Don't hold your breath on Blue Note, I say. It seems they're continuing with their habit of deleting anything and everything. I wanted to get some more Jason Moran the other day, only to find that only Ten (the latest) seemed to be available new! Off to fleaBay...

FWIW, I have a mate who's heavily into 60s/70s soundtracks.

know what you mean, the recording industry needs a new pairing of the stature of Lion and Wolff , not sure if Blue Note are still under the Liberty records umbrella but deleting material will come back to haunt them,
fleaBay is my record collecting saviour but some of the prices make this Scotsman baulk and can induce seizure when it comes to clicking 'pay now' on paypal, just typing that has induced the shakes,,

  • It's not generally that bad for digital stuff, but this week a couple of James Blood Ulmer rarities turned up on fleaBay at box set prices. Ouch!

I tend to have a few searches running at any one time and just pick stuff up at reasonable prices. There's very little I'd go over the odds for as I'm not a collector, just a music nut.

New one this, very loud whilst decorating. Outstanding!

Also lots of other loud & rocky stuff...

killer album on 10" vinyl, shame the rest of their work hasn't measured up to this standard
  • image  new band , just saw them live supporting Gomez, scews my french but they were fucking awesome and well worth hunting down , they played because they are into what they are doing ,and even signed the CD of theirs that i bought (yeah i know matt just bought a CD but i feel they are that good and they dont have any vinyl releases yet !!) brilliant!!, Gomez blew the roof of the joint,
  • Been enjoying Oli Brown & Davy Knowles while decorating, just seen my fav Davy Knowles album ('Roll Away' with Back Door Slam) is now on HDTracks. I don't know if their version is any good as I only have the CD, but I can recommend the album.
  • You should see Oli Brown live if you've not already !

He's a great showman as well as an amazing player....
