William Parker's In Order To Survive - Posium Pedasem
  • Hi Matt, I am after a CD/LP of "Jazz at the Porn Shop", but I want a ADD cd version or a half speed master any ideas were I could find one.

    Cheers Col

P.S. yes it has piano recorded on it.
Col, it is available as a download from HDTracks now in high resolution (well, higher than CD anyway). It should be amongst the best versions available, and is capable of being better than the AAD issue. It all depends on what master they used.

Your computer could downsample it to 16/44 and rip it to a disc if you prefer CD players.

I'm not sure about this. It's still not quite cutting it for me.

Parker's Little Huey Creative Music Orchestra is a wonderful acquired taste :-)
Never heard of him, but that is one mo' fo' of an album cover. Worth buying for that alone...!

As a purveyor of bass notes, you should have ;-) He's free/avant jazz's main bass man.

    It's a stunner of a cover, I agree.

For some reason, I always think of this album of rather gentle European jazz as being called Post Scrotum
    :O

"Free" and "avant-garde", when applied to "jazz" have for me a similar effect as when "pollen" and "small dust particles" are applied to my nasal passages. ;-)
But just coz it's you dave, I'll give the guy a listen...!
  • I'll have a look on Spotti and see what I can recommend.

You probably won't like it, of course :-)

Khalil the Prophet, track 3, is particularly worth having, IMO.

John Zorn - Masada 4 (Dalet). This is the EP-length CD. Not sure why he did that.

John Zorn - Masada 5 (Hei). Back to full-length

Yep. Another CD from Mr Moran arrived Chez Ugly this morning, and it's just as good as the rest.

Not many more to snag now.

Watch out Col, it's some more piano jazz!

    image

Abdullah Ibrahim - Dollar Brand at Montreux.

I remember seeing him in the early 80s at the Bracknell Jazz Festival in a duet with altoist Carlos Ward (on this album). A truly spiritual event.

That's one of the things that makes Ibrahim so special - he's always reaching for something. Sometimes he succeeds, and it's unforgettable; sometimes he fails, and it's time to walk out!

One of jazz's bona fide geniuses, IMO.

Note to Col: You're safe with this one. No pianos
    :-D

I'm not sure Vieux is adding anything much to his father, Ali's work, but this is a nice album, nonetheless.

I picked it up for playing in the car on holiday, and it's great for that and for working to.

Darius Jones Trio - Man'ish Boy

Jones sounds like no one else on the alto, which I guess makes this album a bit of a challenge. But it's a great debut, with a band featuring two older players - Cooper Moore on piano and other things, and Bob Moses on drums.

They just do their thing ;-)

  • The Jason Moran Fest continues with:

    That's last year's album, Ten.

The Crusaders - Chain Reaction/Those Southern Nights.

Something to slide into the weekend with :-)

    Duke Ellington Jazz Violin Session

Take The A Train with strings is just great !!!

  • Wow, never heard of the Ellington - can't say anything about the other two images, as they're not showing here :-(
  • Anything with a well mic'd ride cymbal. Can't get over how good ASIO makes them sound...!

    "Record bloody the change ben..."

    Yeah yeah I hear ya.
  • I thought you were listening to monkey farts. I hear ASIO gives them a real ripping quality  :-D
  • You can smell the digested mangoes...
  • I like Daves last two, not sure about Bens choice though!

Ben - I always like the dark shimmering quality of the ride on Paul Weller's 'You do something to me' from Stanley Road.
  • Diana Krall - The Girl in the Other Room.  Downloaded the hi-res version from HD Tracks.  First time I've heard such a mahoosive difference between CD and HD res.
  • I prefer her in the other country, James :-)
  • I heard she was one of your favourites Dave :X
  • To probably mess up WC Fields' remarks about elephants... 'they look pretty, but I wouldn't like to own one'  :-D

    Disc 2, if you're interested.

Robert Palmer with various Little Feats and Meters.
  • Cool. I dont have any RP.
  • The 70s ones are the ones to have, IMO.

People laugh at the 80s ones :-(
  • Is that why people laugh at me? :-((
  • Not just that  :D
  • Just saying...  =;

    Out of this world...

It's no good. I can't work to it. I'm just sitting here rocking backwards and forwards in my chair with my eyes closed, transported. Only Coltrane does that to me.
